also, while I tend to agree w the main thrust of the essay, I dislike the format of argument-by-birds-of-a-feather, or "you know who ELSE was a vegetarian?"

LOL and fair enough. I dislike that kind of argument a lot (ages ago when I aspired to write a textbook on modern fallacies, that one was on the list).

my friend group (and my marriage!) straddles red-tribe "God is displeased with the increasing immorality" and gray-blue-tribe "if people pay for X, then by principle of revealed preference..." and so I am extra attuned to "I like your conclusion but I already know the counter..."
