I'm not fully convinced, but I entertain the idea that re philosophy, there's no there there. Might just be an attractive nuisance / info hazard for high verbal capacity nerds. Stare through the telescope, see the scratches on the lenses, think you've discovered canals on Mars.

Lol, I see what you’re doing.

But seriously, science without an adequate depth of understanding of metaphysics can get data right and conclusions sadly wrong. I can think of a few examples but rather than trying to throw rocks, I’ll just say that Gödel, Escher, Bach and The Beginning of Infinity are both…

eh, it's kinda... in order to rationally ground any kind of knowledge, you need to do work in the fields we now call "philosophy" but that work is all relatively easy and already done, so it doesn't mean the current academic structure or output is worth a damn

it's more like saying "Elon Musk's work depends on what NASA did in the 1960s" 100% true and he admits it freely but it doesn't mean NASA-right-now is doing anything useful

Like saying "all math is based on the idea that 1+1=2". Sure, technically, but no mathematician is doing a proof of 1+1=2 as a prologue to their paper on tensors. "Cogito ergo sum" was Big News in 1645. So were algebraic coordinates. Now they're taught in 6th grade.

And frankly, all the juice was squeezed out of philosophy by like...the 1st century AD. All the useful, everyday stuff was discovered. Now it's arguments over fringe cases and increasingly tenuous word games.

Also, kudos to
@MorlockP for triggering an important philosophical discussion of the confluence of philosophy and science. Never has meta been more meta.pic.twitter.com/VPBKhh2YGIThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

It seems to me that philosophy is best used as a counter to people who try to wield it as if taking a freshman course provided them with all the answers to the universe. So the most practical use of philosophy is defeating philosophiles.
