As time passes, the medium matures and reflects the changing views. Captain America ends up dealing with the surveillance state, Thor discusses colonialism. Its often surface level but its still there.

Its only at this point that stuff like The Boyz and Invincible come out. Kick-Ass, a similar property, was in many ways before its time and more grounded. The former two are properties that exist only in a context of a mature medium.

Westerns were a dominant genre at one time, progressing from simple black and white morality plays to complex explorations. In many ways, later films in the genre can only be truly appreciated in the context of having experienced all the media of the genre that preceded them.

More cynical, deconstructive takes naturally can only come after the originals. The Boyz is a deconstructive take on superheroes by someone who hates them. Invincible is one by someone who loves them. Both only work in a world where the core conceits are internalized.

There is a concept of ‘media literacy’ at play. I remember a few years back a talk about how we take for granted the basic system literacy in regards to video games; certain concepts are just considered rote yet only exist in context of having been exposed to gaming before.

As comics, The Boys and Invincible were made for comic book readers already familiar with the tropes of the medium. It wasn’t the first deconstruction, obviously, there were whole decades, but they were just reflected of a matured media milieu.

That The Boyz and Invincible can be made in video form reflects that superheroes as a film genre has reached that matured state, where concepts taken for granted can be addressed. Neither have to explain themselves, because the concepts are just understood.

And I think its another piece of evidence that superhero dominance is winding down.

But what comes next? The zombie craze came and went. Fantasy’s return seems strangled by Game of Thrones dismal ending. Star Wars return crashed and burned. Maybe Dune can launch a new wave for sci fi but who knows.

Game of Thrones in particular s fascinating as it seemed to herald a new era. Copycats seemed to crop up everywhere. Now? It seems almost toxic. Disappeared from cultural consciousness. Its more remarkable even than Avatar’s failure to have any cultural or media impact.

Yeah, or Heroes to a degree. There are these series that fumbled their endings and disappeared completely. Its fascinating.

How I Met Your Mother is another one. It's barely even in syndication.
