I'm not QTing or linking directly because I'm not trying to dump him, or make some poor random illustrator feel attacked, but Twitter just showed me a guy posting his card art, and I have some half-formed thoughts about artistic medium.

Disclaimer: I have zero idea what's required or otherwise expected of MtG artists, but facially, it seems obvious the workflow has moved entirely to digital production, card art presumably produced on some model of drawing tablet.

This is in contrast to the early-edition art, which would have been created as physical paintings, probably in a variety of mediums.

Now, what I'm not doing is saying "making oil paintings for your MtG illustration is superior". In a trillion ways it's not. And I'll also say that the quality of card art is more consistent, and on average way better, than in early sets.

However. I think because of the sheer ease of digital work, the readiness with with you can zoom in to fiddle with details, and the way the medium [and maybe the expectations of whoever signs off on art?] lends itself towards highly finished work...

I think a lot of these pieces, objectively better in many ways, are inferior in their function /as card artwork/, relatively to cruder works from earlier sets.

I think this is partly because of the medium properties (making an acrylic painting naturally lends itself to making broader shapes than a digital painting), and partly because when your painting actually has a scale, it may be easier to remember it has to "read" at card scale.

this last bit is it, I think like stage backdrops, which can be rough in person but are "reduced" by distance cards can / should be rough because they're going to be literally reduced to fit onto the card, and then the level of detail is appropriate too much detail is too much

My gut feeling is that a the physical ones varied quite a bit, but 20"x30"ish would probably be reasonable for many of them, but that's a total wild guess on my part.

agree. my father was interviewed on some news show once, back in the days before digital HD tv, he said he was shocked at how shabby the sets were.

The resolution increased but the shabbiness stayed. I noticed my brother watching some Netflix and I was shocked by how shabby everything looks in 4k. Like cheap cosplay tier shabby.
