4/ I'm not saying that no one should attend Clarion. By all accounts, there are excellent instructors there, and many people have used the training to good effect. I'm just saying that for ME, Clarion-which-I-can't-afford was a crutch / excuse. Finally I decided to write well

16/ Arguably my big break / pure dumb lucks was winning the Prometheus award with my first novel. One minor contributor to that was me, cold-calling Eric S Raymond because I thought he might enjoy and blurb my book. What I didn't realize was that he was a Prometheus judge.

17/ It's "unreasonable" and a bit sociopathic to cold-email people, especially famous people (Eric S Raymond, Vernor Vinge, Ken Macleod, David Friedman), especially when you're an known, especially when you're asking a favor.

18/ Am I saying that you should contact famous people and ask for favors? Heck, no. That's rude ... and you should only be rude once every decade or so, and when appropriately apologetic, and after taking pains to minimize the intrusion and to maximize the possible payoff.
