The equivalent for me was the idea of applying to Clarion - a 6 (?) week summer workshop for would-be science fiction authors. I kept circling back to the idea because ...it was too expensive (in time and money), and therefore "I need to go to Clarion and can't" was an excuse.https://twitter.com/kendrictonn/status/1419311975494991875 …

I considered an MFA after I finished training at my atelier. I did think it might give me career flexibility but if we're being honest, it was an escape fantasy: I was stuck in a place I didn't want to be, trying to figure out how to paint outside of school & start a career. https://twitter.com/annehelen/status/1419281990839201794 …

2/ Two things finally broke me of the idea: (1) was an old gf (circa 2000) mentioning that a friend of hers had attended ... and then hadn't written anything. (2) was reading a (pretty bad) book by someone who had attended.

3/ I realized I could do any of these three things: * not write * write poorly, or * write well ...all without a six week course. The only question was: which of those three did I want to do?

4/ I'm not saying that no one should attend Clarion. By all accounts, there are excellent instructors there, and many people have used the training to good effect. I'm just saying that for ME, Clarion-which-I-can't-afford was a crutch / excuse. Finally I decided to write well

5/ I rewrote the entire 2-book series something like 6 or so times, and then re-wrote the first chapter an additional 2 times, IIRChttps://twitter.com/serbantanasa/status/1419349298655989761 …

6/ with regard to "endlessly", no, I didn't have a problem with that I've been reading SF novels since I was about 6 or 7, and I knew exactly what I wanted to achieve, and what the quality bar was, and could tell the delta between my work & that I kept polishing until I hit it

7/ If you're polishing endlessly, I'd say that, in mathematical terms, you've got a series that's not converging. This is either because (a) you're not sure what target you're trying to hit, (b) you're not accurately measuring the delta between where you are & where want to be

8/ , (c) you know what delta is required, but you are incapable of making it, or (d) your first chapter is actually already good enough, but your struggling w the emotional process of taking your hands off the chess piece and declaring the move done. Try to figure out which.

I was on a panel once with an "author" who refused to put her book on Kindle because (she said) she didn't want it to be pirated. That wasn't the real reason, though. If you make a book easy to get and nobody wants it, you've failed. She was afraid of failure.

She actually said she was waiting for "them" to address the piracy problem before she make her books available electronically. ("They" still haven't and never will, and plenty of authors sell books anyway)

It helps to be a little delusional about your prospects as an author. If one were realistic about one's chances of success, one would probably never finish a book. I worked very hard but was also extremely lucky

13/ @St_Rev has a quote off in the direction of "success is built from talent, luck, and sociopathy and true standouts max out all of those three" I will modify that a bit and replace "sociopathy" with "unreasonable focus". Not compromising for the sake of "getting along", etc

14/ Sociopathy is basically this, but totally maxed out. At lesser levels, and with a respect for people and for objective morality, it loses (some) friends but drives (some) success.

16/ Arguably my big break / pure dumb lucks was winning the Prometheus award with my first novel. One minor contributor to that was me, cold-calling Eric S Raymond because I thought he might enjoy and blurb my book. What I didn't realize was that he was a Prometheus judge.

17/ It's "unreasonable" and a bit sociopathic to cold-email people, especially famous people (Eric S Raymond, Vernor Vinge, Ken Macleod, David Friedman), especially when you're an known, especially when you're asking a favor.

18/ Am I saying that you should contact famous people and ask for favors? Heck, no. That's rude ... and you should only be rude once every decade or so, and when appropriately apologetic, and after taking pains to minimize the intrusion and to maximize the possible payoff.

19/ But the point is (err, points are): * luck matters, but so does drive (which you can adjust) and talent (which you can also adjust via practice practice practice) * ...and luck itself knocks on those doors where it is welcomed.
