I've felt this way about many projects. Dunning Kruger means that the conscientious are silent while midwits and the under-educated dominate the discourse. or, to quote Yeats "The best lack all conviction, while the worst /Are full of passionate intensity."https://twitter.com/VarangianSkull/status/1417824676642967558 …

9/ Good detail here that it's either a rejection or an elaboration. China Meiville, like many leftists, hates Tolkien, but his response in the form of the Bas-Lag series was also, IMO, excellent. I wish more authors talked about influences.https://twitter.com/MaiqTL/status/1417860785745797128 …

That's a good point; all writing is done within a culture, either as a rejection or inheritance. Some of them are hard to see from a distance, and it's nice when the author has enough awareness to credit his or her forbears.

Interesting how WHH has a few really great stories that just haven't made it into popular consciousness outside a few examples (Toho's Matango). House on the Borderlands, Night Lands, etc are awesome but tone, etc sets them apart in terms of period from later strange fiction.
