Because low-status followers like @violenceobscene try to get a little recognition from the other bullies a little higher in their social stack by ganging up on the same nerds that the higher tier haters are hating on

The first "con" I attended was for a LOTR themed MUD 20 years ago. Drove from my town in Ontario to Chicago with 2 friends who played, and we met a dozen other people who flew in from all over the US to hang out for a weekend. Just stayed at one guy's house, all slept on floor.
In Feb 2020, a college hosted its 1st SF con. A dean decided to forbid advertising it to non-students . . . or students. So turnout was . . . low. Every panel outnumbered its audience. But it was a good time, and as things return to normal I'm looking forward to another.
I've never been to a SF con and hadn't thought I'd ever be interested, now I'm hoping (since I can't make this one) it turns into an annual event so I can come at a later date and get to meet you guys.
This! So much this!

(I won't be attending, since I had my fill of cons in academe.* But why would someone jump on other people getting together to talk about a hobby they like?
