I think you're on to something here. After living below poverty line for years I get an intense feeling of satisfaction from paying others to perform service that I would've done myself in the past.

Example: had to fix my old cars multiple times out of necessity. While the feeling of accomplishment that came with a job well done was great, the feeling I get now when I think "I can actually afford to take it to the mechanic" is better.
