I would expect a secondary effect where the proliferation of aftermarket parts suppliers would make entry of new manufacturers easier. Possibly some convergence on general quasi-OS specs/patterns like you see in unbranded Chinese goods.

Also, potentially, lower cost of repair would mean that the new "cheaper version" would be older refurbs. The overall result of the second (and third and etc.) order effects are really hard to predict here (many such cases).

Upper-middle-class lifestylers' ability to get a continual drip of "next new things" and bureaucrats' ability to micromanage the built environment are in direct conflict with working class people's ability to build physical capital. Guess who wins?

how does UMC getting new things prevent working class people from accumulating capital?

The intervention of the legal system sustaining business models based on artificial obsolescence. This makes higher levels of product dev investment sustainable at the cost of making the maintenance and refurbishing of older products more expensive or outright illegal.

what legal systems enforce what artificial obsolescence? ...and how does this prevent capital accumulation?

      Replying to @MorlockP @shadowcat_mst and

The enforcement of IP restrictions on aftermarket parts and anti-hacking restrictions on circumventing DRM as a service. The result is that the lower cost option to obtain a base capability (car, tractor, what have you) by refurbishing is constrained.

so the working class's ability to accumulate capital is based on the fact that a new radiator for their car costs $121 https://www.amazon.com/Spectra-Premium-CU2310-Complete-Radiator/dp/B000C7TUMU … and not based on the fact that they spend money on cigarettes and lottery instead of saving?

      Replying to @MorlockP @shadowcat_mst and

It can be both. Accumulation of financial savings can be less beneficial at lower incomes than acquiring tools or converting ongoing payments into fully owned capital goods. Bending the market in ways that favor buying over maintaining diminishes this opportunity.

"the working class spend $3,000 per year on cigarettes and lottery tickets, but the IP in a radiator raises the cost from $120 to $121, and that's why they can't save money, and therefore the upper middle class karens I already dislike are to blame" is...less than convincing.

finally, St_Rev has a saying along the lines of "if the people you complain about oppressing you just disappeared, would your life get better? if not, it's not oppression". Make Ford and Kubota disappear. Finally the working class is free of IP and DRM & can accumulate capital

The complaint is not about Ford and Kubota but about the voters and regulators who create incentives and opportunities for these companies to adopt one business model over another.
