A book that changed my life in regards to writing was reading Dostoevsky's notebooks with early drafts of Crime and Punishment. I thought it would give me secret insight, but it's just terrible. His drafts were a mess of half-thoughts, poor pacing, and bad dialogue.

And then I realized: Oh. He didn't give up on his bad writing. He changed it over many, many iterations.
