I don't follow the US legal process closely. I'm British. I just think the way i expressed it is the problem that exists. DMCA just made it possible to make a criminal complaint out of reverse engineering someone else's device for them.

I'm not suggesting manufacturers should be forced to publish manuals and schematics. It's just one of the signals of a quality product if they do. Sadly less products are high quality these days ...

I think right to repair is more closely coupled to the debate regarding ownership of devices vs using them. In particular whether we really own our devices if we can't arrange or own repair with 3rd parties. This also relates to what we can do with them.https://boingboing.net/2012/08/23/civilwar.html …
