well maybe my parents barely did anything. figured i had it covered. they were basically correct otoh this was twenty years ago and I understand that things have gotten fucked up since then

also, parental involvement in all of this happens when parents know the game my parents both went to ... fine...middle of the bell curve colleges. First generation to do so, thought of college like trade school. I was only person in my family to EVER go to a good college

100% of what my parents knew was: * be smart / do well on SATs * get good grades * extracurriculars can't hurt * when meeting interviewer, have a good handshake laughably underprepared for "The Game"

this was basically my parents' view of what I should do and they were professors when i applied i guess they didnt deal with undergrads much maybe

it also didnt occur to me to apply to anything other than the local land grant school and one the next state over it seemed fine they gave me a full ride i mostly just didnt think much about any of it mad this seems no longer possible

I'm mad that code schools didn't exist and I spent 5 terrible years and went deeply into debt for an education that was 75% filler / cross subsidies for departments that bored me I envy the Youth
