1/ My poor tired brain is failing me. In science fiction, a standard game-changing gizmo is the so-called "nuclear damper." This is a technobabble thingy that projects a magic field which prevents nuclear explosives from exploding.

2/ the nuclear damper is popular with scifi authors who want to write about future land warfare, but do not want to deal with the party-pooper ramifications of battlefield nuclear weapons.

3/ I *know* I have read dozens of examples of nuclear dampers in scif stories. But I can't remember them. The only ones that I can dredge up are the ones in the Traveller role playing game, and "The Irvhank Effect" by Harry Turtledove.
