9/ The second approach is to turn rightist and hierarchical. Look at the Soviets. In the early years they took their own propaganda seriously, got rid of officer ranks, formed worker collectives, etc. It worked hideously. Productivity requires hierarchy.

A quibble: Perhaps the best thing about Carter's presidency was the deregulation it introduced in many areas, such as air travel and brewing. Nixon was far more regulatory.
