there's a conspiracy theory that roughly goes: 1. houses are not normal financial assets, ownership of homes (+ land) has important downstream social consequences 2. these purchases are being made to change those social factors, not for monetary returns

3. the monetary loss this implies will be made up by favorable treatment from government agencies (the fed, most obviously, but also every other regulator) 4. thus, this is not a normal investment, it's a backdoor into taking control of the housing stock
