I don't understand how anyone is bent over a barrel, bc dollars are used in transaction, not as a place to STORE value

Or 401Ks. I just put in the maximum my employer matched and stayed for long enough to be vested, boom, guaranteed to beat inflation.

when I did this I worked in sales for a tech company making like $20/hr after commission. it was during the bull run so I think I ended up making 40% returns.

most people don't earn much most people don't save much This Is Known ...and what of it? US has Soc Security, which (a) provides a decent floor, and (b) is the only savings that most people have. Again: there is minimal or no wealth SAVED IN DOLLARS, so inflation doesn't hurt
