16/ All of life is tradeoffs. A tree either rots or is logged. An individual either does a fun job and has less power over his environment, or has a grinding job and has more power to manage land.https://twitter.com/HorrorsGreeley/status/1397881538927267840 …

Brilliant. They always want someone else to pay for the Disney ideal of a tree naturally dying in a pristine forest, observed only by them.

17/ Agreed. I've got a few massive tree trunks in my forest, on their side, 3/4 rotted and covered with moss. On the one hand, sure, aesthetic...but on the other, that coulda been a timber framed workshop or a kitchen table for a family.https://twitter.com/EricRichards22/status/1397881410548084736 …

20/ I have very specific goals for my 40 acres of forest , and I've invested a lot of time in learning about forest management, and I've invested a lot of money in tools. I'm carefully dropping dead trees, clearing ancient rock walls, working w my wife to plant new trees, >>>

21/ piling slash (tree lopped off limbs) in the undercanopy to slowly rot and return nutrients to the soil (and provide habitats for creatures in the intervening decades), cut out and burn invasive species that kill trees, etc. This is hard work. If you want THIS, do THIS.

It really is that simple. You like trees? Buy forest and let it be. You like forests? Buy forests and let it be in timescales that are as long as forests. Maybe you need a foundation or corporation or nation state to make it happen https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_Nature_Heritage_Foundation …

Especially old growth stuff like that. They get lightning struck, windblown, etc. all the time. Do they think would it be better to let it rot?

"better to let it rot" I'm pretty logging-sympathetic but rotting plays an important role in forest health as well. I once saw a quantitative estimate that a big dead tree on the ground supports more living biomass than a live standing one, though I can't find the paper rn

This is why one piles up all of the slash and lets it rot.

for sure. best guess, there are some specific benefits to having big dead trees on the ground, but might well not outweigh the value of boards if there's enough sound wood in there
