But how heavy? I can move a 50lb bucket of sand around without feeling like I'm going to injure myself.

depends what you want to train for do you want to train for endurance? Get a 35 or 50 lb KB and do 50 swings in a set. Do you want to train for low endurance / high strength? Go heavier and do fewer reps.
