I have a very positive initial impression overall. The author clearly did significant research to present way more detail here than otherwise available in English and also seems to have a fine balance between academic rigor and enjoyable style.
The maps are grouped together at the beginning and there are a bunch of them, with surprisingly good breadth and depth. In particular, I always go back to the Romanian perspective: we're about a century after Trajan, so *mostly* but not entirely below Danube.
In general, my approach to the "Romanian Dark Ages" (600-1200ish core but not like it was real rosy right before or after) will be straightforward: - Learn about situation before, such as this - Contemporary history in bordering areas - History from after Then speculation!
There's an 80 page Background section which is essentially a monograph on Roman military equipment and organization around 200 A.D. Skimming my way through the tail of it now, as skipping would be cheating but it's way more in-depth than I can take in right now.
The author says that Caracalla was the height of the Empire, after which decline, and that he ended persecution of the Christians.
I don't like the argument that adopting Christianity weakened Rome and led to its fall, but I note that juxtaposition supports the claim.pic.twitter.com/ttPLUskmdF
Correlation is not causation Perhaps a weak empire is ripe for a new religion
