19: I finally finished the first draft in January, 2020. I thought I might get the novel out last year. I produced two more drafts, assembled a beta reader team, and sent the manuscript to them in July.

20: Beta reader feedback took longer than I anticipated, but I can't complain: I got great feedback from a good cross-section of people from different backgrounds.

21: I finished the final draft in November. Now the question became traditional publish or self-publish? I'd been published before (by
@ManningBooks), so I'd been through that process.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likesShow this thread -
22: After consulting with my experienced author friend
@JamesRHannibal, I decided I'd go with self-publishing rather than get an agent and submit traditionally.1 reply 0 retweets 1 likeShow this thread -
23: The story was non-traditional: there was no clear protagonist; the plot was complex; the structure a bit jarring. That might present barriers to traditional publishing. I'd done my best to smooth it out, though, and it's a feel-good, uplifting story.

24: I also have to admit, I can be a control freak; I knew how I wanted it to look, and I have the skills to make it look that way, with the exception of the cover. I didn't want to give up some of that control.

25: I also didn't want to wait another year to get the book out the door; it had already been delayed enough.

26: I'd also for years been following several other self-published authors on Twitter. I followed
@hughhowey first, many years ago, when I learned about his success with Wool in a story on@slashdot.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likesShow this thread -
27: Through him, I found
@robkroese. Through him,@jondelarroz,@BrianNiemeier,@AetherCzar,@MorlockP,@TheBrometheus. I watched what they did, I read their books, and I learned.2 replies 0 retweets 2 likesShow this thread -
