A space program requires the involvement of many highly educated people as well as manual laborers. The proportion of each was probably about the same in the US and USSR space programs.

I agree this achievement is the Soviets', but I'm uncertain if Soviet aerospace and governance was more or less "working class" than the American equivalent. I tentatively suggest that communism is usually an upper middle class phenomenon (French Revolution, Soviets, US 2021)
