2/ This is for two reasons: * genes are complex and interact, so a guy with optimal 5'10" fitness might have conflicting genes for both tallness and shortness, which he'll reshuffle and pass on to kids * selection is slow, incomplete, and non deterministic

I have an argument with the way this is put. Evolution doesn't 'keep a reserve population around.' Instead, by the definition of the distribution, there is a standard deviation of variation around the mean. This is a form of circular reasoning, actually.

AKTSHUALLY there are distributions for which the standard deviation is not defined. :-P
