I have zero first-hand experience with homesteading. I noticed nothing wrong with it at first glance. Now, having noticed the lack of vehicle or driveway I am sure you are correct. It's fluff, a feel-good piece for people who really ought to never leave cities.

Indeed, in my family's historical journals they note that English law in the 1600s required any new cottage had at least 4 acres of land. That was the minimum that the landholders could carve out for renting to "ordinary" Englishmen.

In the case of my family's ancestor, that land provided him with room to "garden for raising vegetables, and the stockyard would have been for the ''two cows, one heifer, one little calf and also one mare"". He was a cobbler for his primary form of income on that land as well.
