Society selectively bred out the naturally intelligent and competent individuals, erasing centuries of gains in general intelligence. That Japan is imitating the Mouse Utopia experiment—in humans—is fairly frightening.

Because competencies don't overlap. Being competent at chasing money is synonymous in many fields with allowing yourself to be promoted past the point of competence. In a more sane system that would not be true.
