1/ I love the Enlightenment. I hate authoritarianism. ...it took us less than 250 years to go from "kings shouldn't tell us what to do" to "gender isn't real, IQ isn't real, black skin is holy and white skin is sinful, a cult founded by a child rapist is a religion of peace"

2/ The biggest intellectual project, and the most important one I can imagine, is trying to fashion an Enlightenment 2.0 that does not spontaneously cut its own dick off and then prostrate itself before gutter ideologies.

3/ Is this possible? Or is the suicide baked into the cake, and it's just a simple matter of the state machine running forward to its inevitable end state? I don't know.

4/ I've had several replies telling me "human nature" no I accept human nature is as it is, but that is not the end of the discussion. This is a question of engineering IN THE FACE OF human nature.

Even if there are no perfect answers, and the best we can do is get a slightly better answer that also ends in failure 250 years later, that's a solid century or two of good done for millions of people.

I kinda feel like the Enlightenment was always bullshit nowadays, ngl. The opposition to authoritarianism feels almost incidental to its rejection of spiritual truth, and can’t help but wonder what true principles it had. It feels very much like the Dune quote about freedom.

Laconically, rejecting the divine right of kings feels more about the divine part than the king part.

Chinese dynasties tend to last 250 years on average and go through the same (kali yuga?) cycle. Seems to be a lineage/successor problem. Even at a higher level than most human nature problems.

10/ I'm not talking about engineering AROUND it, but engineering WITH IT. We don't build towers by engineering "around" soils; we study soils, we learn about them, then we engineer foundations that work based on how soils work.https://twitter.com/kitten_beloved/status/1371825553427230723 …

Careful about the impulse to engineer around human nature. That's where so many of our current pathologies arise from. What we need is exit rights, so people who still are capable of building the kind of society we want to live in can go do so without worthless baggage.

Liberalism cannot be sustained because its principles preclude its own self-protection. The only way to fortify it is to derive some verisimilitude with religion's innate appeal. Youth indoctrinated with bite-sized tenets and a demonstrable promise of a better life.

I agree with the basic critique of liberalism -undermining its own foundations -I continue to believe it is only a critique of 19th century Mill utilitarian liberalism, and not of 17th century Locke national liberalism. I do not believe Locke necessarily leads to Mill.

I think a primary flaw is that Liberalism refuses to incorporate Truth. Some things must be axiomatic for your foundation, and those truths come from an outside source. By not choosing Christ, Liberalism is founded on shifting sand.

When you reach that point, you then have to enact some form of Blasphemy Law, or sow the seeds of your own destruction. Liberalism is self contradictory and doomed. The question is whether we want the nominal fruits, the real fruits, or the tree.
