7/ ...when the correct thing to do is to search out evidence that could theoretically prove your theory wrong (and the more pieces of data you find that fail to disprove your theory, the better your confidence in it can be).

I think it's simpler than that---your proofreader is, among other things, lazy. Thinking about non-standard word usage in context, or trying to properly reference it in the OED or equivalent, takes some effort. Googling the top definition takes five seconds.
