5/ Also, I looked at something like two dozen LaTeX book templates, and didn't like any of them as much as I liked the layout that I've already achieved in LibreOffice for my novels Also, LaTeX does not automatically do the cross-referencing that I needed / wanted. >>>

6/ So I was gonna write code one way or another. I decided to * use LibreOffice * write a script that would instrument the cross references from macros already in the .txt file * have same script insert index reference points so OpenOffice could build the index automagically

7/ The goal is basically like old C makefiles: * I can make whatever changes I want in the "source code" (book.txt) * I can then type "rake index" * finished book in multiple formats (.mobi, PDF, etc.) pops out other end Important for 2nd edition

9/ I don't know that it was LACKING, but I had embedded macros I'd written e.g. (CCC "Intro: Subsection: SubSubSection") that I wanted replaced with (see p. 173) And this was relatively easy for me to do.https://twitter.com/JayGSlater/status/1367129930505535491 …

As one of the LaTeX boosters, I raise my eyebrows slightly—the process you describe in tweet #6 is almost exactly how my LaTeX workflow goes. What cross-referencing feature was lacking? If anything, I found I was able to do more, moving from OO->LaTeX.

10/ and, sure, maybe LaTeX can already do this, but ... it would've taken me 4 hrs to figure it out, and it took me 4 hrs to write my own script to do it

11/ ok, so the feature IS missing and someone needs to write it? well ... over the last 1.5 days, I just wrote it FOR ME, for Open Office.https://twitter.com/JayGSlater/status/1367130380852219906 …

Indexing, too, although if you're aiming to generate an index based off of specific words/phrases in the running text, that does seem to be a missing feature. Maybe I'll write a package...

12/ also, the core issue here is that I AM AWARE of LaTeX and HAVE USED IT and understand exactly what it's capable of ... ... ... and I don't like it.

13/ I don't know if it was not suitable for me or not. What I know is that I would have to either (a) learn some feature of a software package that I hate, or (b) write some feature for a software toolchain that I like I far far far prefer 'b' https://twitter.com/poutinecurd/status/1367130943606173701 …

Ah, yeah. You can do that pretty readily in LaTeX, but the migration from any other format is indeed something of a pain. Took me 2-3 months of 1-2 evenings a week to go from where I was in OO to where I am in LaTeX in my latest big project.

I'd like to retweet this entire thread. Because it sums up everything I've ever experienced with latex. Only severe Stockholm Syndrome prompts people to recommend using it.

17/ I ABSOLUTELY concede that LaTeX is without compare for things in the last 3-5% of complexity. but... I am doing very very simple stuff.https://twitter.com/JayGSlater/status/1367132143579762688 …

As my wife's grandfather says, "It's the kind of thing you'd like if you like that kind of thing." For complicated typesetting, I can't go back. I also see why some people find it an unpalatable cup of tea.
