I think I just thought firmware meant it was proprietary. firm as in company

Ohhh interesting. That possibility was not one I’d ever considered. I’d be interested in a map of where people grew up (time and geography) and what they originally thought firmware’s etymology was.

yeah, I learned "firmware" back in the days of EEPROM programmers that you connected to your Apple ][e with a ribbon cable so I always knew it was...uh... on the spectrum
