1/ Reread Johnny Mnemonic yesterday for the first time in decades. Still so good. Not for the plot, but for the atmosphere of a truly foreign, "one minute into the future" world. Someone asked me recently "how could a cyberpunk world ever have existed?". My answer was

2/ That cyberpunk depends on economics that aren't true in our world. Data is too cheap and surveillance too effective in 2021. Cyberpunk depends on scarcity where we have post scarcity. But... man, Johnny Mnemonic. Thinking about about the domes where the Low Techs live,

3/ Caked over with black cooking smoke on the inside. Why domes? Then started thinking about Blade Runner and the foul atmosphere. Started thinking about domes again, and came up with a vision of an alt history, branching sometime between 1800 and 1900 where ...

4/ the radiological bombs used in the Dirty War (1930? 1950?) totally trashed the environment, and people built dieselpunkish steel and plexiglass domes...and the whole world started coalescing. Alt history where aerospace advanced faster, and computer slower... Need to >

6/ There's no voting in matters of art! 😂 But, also, I want the branch point much further back. North America needs to be multiple countries. Czar either still in power or only recently overthrown. Etc. This is key for "1 minute into the future / alien"https://twitter.com/Steven_Swenson/status/1363285329998999553?s=19 …

I vote for 1950s. Korean War goes hot, maybe a dynasty loyalist rebellion undercuts Chinese support in the North, a three sided civil war and two super powers sounds like an adequate powder keg to test tac-nuke doctrine

7/ But, also, fission nukes aren't dirty enough. I am talking about saturation bombing w dirty bombs. THAT motivates the domes.

Really interesting thoughts on the domes. I love how many layers of the world the story moves through for how short it is. In thinking of the conditions necessary to get the domes going, Jones is ex-Navy, so that gives some insight into warfare shortly before (abandoned tech).
