8/ I was in second or third grade when I read Farmer in the Sky. Two plot elements in that book: (1) someone says "a space colony? that's an artificial environment where things could collapse". Response is "yes ... like L.A." (2) power goes out. People cut down & burn trees

9/ I was literally 7 or 8 years old when I took these lessons to heart and realized that the "authorities" and the universe don't give a shit, and don't have to obey any promises. You are as safe and prepared as you choose to be. Man the fuck up and take some responsibility.
