Two friends who’ve struggled with depression in the Before Times have commented how having something *real* to worry about has been a help for them. Anecdote, obviously. But humans are tougher and more complicated than the suicide narrative would suggest.

The commonplace assumption that suicides go up in tough times is 1) unsupported by any historical evidence I’ve come across and 2) kinda deeply insulting to mankind.

Many months ago, someone on my timeliness pointed out that if suicides didn't increase, it implies that we don't understand what drives suicides.

I'm waiting to see a detailed demographic & regional break down not just national. The overall rates may show no change, but younger age groups (teen to young adult male particularly) may show an increase. The caveat being this feeling is based on observations from my community.
