1/ I'm not in a bad mood, but I've got one small cranky thought: I don't understand when midwits come into smart spaces and say really really dumb things. I've occasionally hung out w, say, a bunch of physics PhDs who def have a std dev or so on me, and I am well aware of that

You could use the Feynman approach of asking a simple question as if it was essential for your understanding of the issue, which would potentially silence the person if they had any self-awareness. (It's described in his book of correspondence, my copy of which isn't here.)

I copied Feynman's approach for when someone tries to greensplain energy to me, by asking simple questions like how much CO2 comes from burning a ton of [dealer's choice hydrocarbon] or how much power generation is missing when CA imports 80 TWh per year…
