1/ I'm not in a bad mood, but I've got one small cranky thought: I don't understand when midwits come into smart spaces and say really really dumb things. I've occasionally hung out w, say, a bunch of physics PhDs who def have a std dev or so on me, and I am well aware of that

5/ I gave the impression earlier that this was maybe an IQ thing, and I didn't mean to. It's not that physicists are smarter than me (well not JUST that). It's that they know about the domain. I wouldn't talk about skiing with a competitive skier either, of any IQ.

6/ this is reasonable, but two problems: (a) dumbness is correlated, so the same person who has bad opinions on electrons has bad opinions on making chicken stock, and the electoral college, and cars >>>https://twitter.com/jeremywreal/status/1359920837541785602 …

7/ (b) I suppress 90% of my "u r tarded" comments, and even then, I am caustic, mean, and unremittingly nasty to people, and I strive to be less like myself in that regard. So ... I just have to heard stupid things all the time, and can't respond.

8/ Because, if I were to speak, what is there to say? "I have heard 23 opinions from you, and there have been 35 kinds of dumb in those 23 statements. Really, twitter person, I think it would be best if you never spoke to me...or even near me." ? That's not so nice.

9/ When you ask a person a question, they emit words. When you ask a dumb person a question, they emit dumb words.https://twitter.com/josecamoessilva/status/1359926584539447296 …

I think another part of it is not knowing how to be active in an intellectual discussion from a place of ignorance. Even you mentioned talking less, when my tendency (assuming it's appropriate) is to talk *more*, asking questions and seeking whether my understanding makes sense.
-
And having been on both sides of this, that's a great conversation! Obviously not the only one you want to have, but questions from someone who is really thinking and engaged and trying to grow based on what you know are invigorating.

"don't have the lay of the land enough..." Oh my. That is magnificent. .
