People don't realize that most, perhaps all of the impetus for our actions come burbling up from hidden mechanisms inside our minds. Only after these desires are formed and sometimes enacted do we slap motivations on top, to give the veneer of rationality.

I don't believe we're automatons, doomed to follow our programming without free will, but the system for human thought and action is not as simple as "I was (emotion), so did (action)"
