I've always thought of trees as just another crop, with a growing season of 10-20 years instead of 4 months.

There are literal tree farms in northern Michigan, you can tell because they will all be planted in neat rows.

I've driven past many of these pine rows in the southeastern USA as well. Very common along the highway, and there are many more sawmills than you'd expect scattered around. Due to transport costs, they don't like to buy trees from very far away

Heh, I was once accused by a friend of being some kind of hippie because I wanted an e-reader. So I explained where the chemicals and electricity come from that go into making and powering them. He apologized and said, "hippies never think that far into it".
