Jeeze. Pound the wedge in a bit more and soak the axe head in a bucket of linseed oil. The fibers will swell back up again (and the head won't rust). Old stuff can take more maintenance, but there's nothing inherently superior about the fiberglass handles.

Completely off topic to your post, when I was 8 my big brother and I found big and small 50 yr old rusty axe heads in the barn. My dad gave us files and after about 19 hours of filing making them shiny and sharp, took us out to the hardware store and bought us handles and wedges
I wish I still had that little axe. I chopped a lot of good stuff with it.
