Folks have been suggesting that I use LaTeX to format the farm book. This struck me as a decent idea ...but also scary. I know LaTeX, but didn't want to !@# with some huge pile of templates. Googled "latex formatting service". Asked for a quote. Got it in < 1 hr. Yessssss.

2/ $1,500 isn't cheap, but ... when it comes to opportunity cost, it'd cost me a hell of a lot more than that in lost wages to get this done right myself.

You can use Pandoc to export Markdown as LaTeX. Not sure how finicky it’d be for a manuscript.

the very very big issue I have is the index, and the cross references inside the document. I want to pay a human to translate my "see more information SECTION XYZ" into the appropriate thing to provide "see also vol 2, page 441".

Fair enough. Just trying to save you $1500! You’re already writing in Markdown. It’s a single command to see what the output would look like.
