So I have started using Discord, the gamer-first I-can't-believe-its-not-Slack, for an actual professional project, and I'm just chortling to myself at the prospect of trying to convince the IRS that "Discord Nitro" is a legitimate business expense because of "Server Boost."

That's not actually how it works, of course. In the vast majority of cases you don't need to convince the IRS of anything; you just do the bookkeeping and in the unlikely event they ask questions you provide answers. There are, of course, businesses for which this is an expense.

I probably won't expense it just on a judgement call as to whether it is necessary and customary for my LLC to be doing this particular thing. Makes no big difference either way; I'm just amused by having to think about it for more than a picosecond.
