different bases of comparison "systematic mass murder by gas by a specific government" versus "all deaths incidentally attributable to all governments over time that indicated any degree of inspiration by communist ideas" and you know it

okay, so take 20M > 6M (best estimate for deliberate state killings by the Soviets specifically)

This website suggests the appropriate figure for the Nazis would be around 18.7 million: https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/documenting-numbers-of-victims-of-the-holocaust-and-nazi-persecution …

sure, but that starts to get hazy on distinctions between deliberate state killings and general collateral damage (and I dunno if "collateral damage in a war you started" really is any less morally weighty than Holocaust-style execution, but everyone seems to think it is)

There probably should be more weight on collateral deaths if you started the war; that seems fair.

but if you count that then the Soviets' figure probably grows too

It depends; which wars would you deem them to have "started"?

Seems entirely fair to attribute collateral deaths in Soviet-occupied Poland to the Soviet state

only the collateral deaths? Not the deaths of Polish regulars and partisans defending their homeland? Or the massacre of 22,000 class enemies https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katyn_massacre … ? ...and not fractional responsibility for deaths in German half, which was enabled / encouraged by Russia?

Yes, deaths of the regulars and partisans too, absolutely! I'm going to go with "each gets responsibility for their own half" though, otherwise it will be impossibly messy
