I got a Roomba for Christmas, and when I tried it on the ground floor of the house, there were too many rooms and it couldn't seem to find its home base to recharge. Tried a few times. Tried blocking off rooms. So Moved it to a small area (1 room)...just hit "go home" ...

3/ ok, had a little bit of success - moved a chair, moved some cables, and the robot found the base station ...but then tried to dock 4 times, road right up on the ramp, go to the right spot ...and spun around and left ... another 5 times.

4/ I was even holding down the base station so it wouldn't skid around (careful to keep fingers out of IR path). Then tried something else: move base station back 4" so it was solid against a wall. ...robot then docked. May try two sided tape or wood screws to secure base.

5/ And then after it docked, I emptied it, and flipped it overr to inspect. I've used it twice, and both times the three moving parts have gotten ENTIRELY bogged up with long hairs and linen threads. So had to hand cut those out. :( [ OTOH, my manual vacuuum has same prob >>

6/ I guess it's just a law of nature that if there are long hairs and linen threads on your floor, that every vacuum that's manufactured gets clogged and needs to be disassembled and have stuff cut out w knife. Kinda amazing there's not better tech in 21st century :( ]

7/ Good feedback! I moved one chair and one cable, and performance got MUCH better, < 30 seconds.https://twitter.com/mikethegratest/status/1347552627660349440 …

I believe internal mapping capability depends on the model.

Mine took about 3 full vacuum cycles on the downstairs to map the area properly, but I have a lot of chairs sitting around that it can sort of get under, but then not get out of. To your other issue, finding a wall to rest the dock against solved the docking issue for me too.

They do improve with time. I bought one for my wife a year ago, ran it in mapping mode 3 or 4 times, edited the generated map and broke down into rooms, since then it works quite well. Not perfect, but well enough that I consider it useful.
