I think this is the key point. In Italy today, you'll also see the vast majority of men wearing jackets, but the formality is cued by the cut and materials, the mere existence of a jacket doesn't mean "formal" in that context.

15/ Specifically, the "cheap" camera in 1930s, the Brownie, cost something like 1.5 weeks AVERAGE wage http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/1_early/1_early_photography_-_prices_charged.htm … In the early-1930s, Kodak were charging £2 10s 0d for their basic model, a No 2 Brownie That equates to about £350 in 2009, allowing for inflation.

16/ So for a working poor person, that might be 3 weeks' wages. How many blue collar, lower middle class / upper middle class people in 1930, do you think, worked for 4 months, saved ALL the discretionary income after rent and food, and blew it on one camera ?

18/ meh when I link to a fairly comprehensive source, where the guy has clearly done a deep dive and has collected hard numbers, that's not ABSOLUTE proof ... but it has a lot more evidentiary weight than "but the popular myth is ____"https://twitter.com/Cary_Bleasdale/status/1346817708801843200 …

I think this is incorrect or Brit sources are wrong on this. "...initial price of $1 (equivalent to $31 in 2019) along with the low price of Kodak roll film and processing, ...." The brownie is famous for making photography universal. Although I'd note so is the $900 iphone

QT's a handful of photos costing what a fancy TV costs today, but link says re cartes de visites by 1890s "some photographers charged only 6d (£0.025) per dozen, so bringing photographs within the reach of a far wider audience"

i think morlockp's general point is correct, and i share his annoyance at the original tweet, but i think photos were more affordable to more people / popular with more than the rich by the 20s/30s than his overall thread suggests.

Your use of good here is your subjective opinion. Nihlism is not ‘disagrees with my aesthetic sensibilities,’ even if that was what was happening, and its not.
