2/ In more depth: Sheep, left to their own devices, reproduce. A fixed size of land has a fixed carrying capacity for sheep. We can not support an infinite herd of sheep ... ...and at the same time, we like eating lamb chops, leg of lamb, lamb burgers, etc. Therefore,,,

Oh. I’m not a sheep raiser but have raised beef cattle. We sold our feeders but kept breeder cows. I didn’t know sheep raisers did this.
