Somebody mentioned that my infant son Moose looks a lot like me and thereby hangs a tale For those who don’t know, my wife is Taiwanese and I am standard American mutt (old stock German and French Huguenot one side, Romanian and Dutch Jews the other)

So we figured Moose would look at least half-Asian from the jump (the “at least” is bc when we go to Taiwan and hang with wife’s friends and family there, sooner or later somebody wonders as to whether *I* am half-Asian evidently I look sorta Asian to Asians raised in Asia

this is where is gets interesting: I knew but also had no idea how malleable babies’ faces are. Moose’s apparent ethnicity is extremely variable from one day to the next, depending on how he is growing and what his coloration is. It’s kind of wild.

Moose was born looking exactly like my wife’s dad, and I mean E X A C T L Y kid was pulled from the womb looking like his grandpa had shrunk and was irate about China being back on its bullshit

not too long after, I noticed he didn’t look as much like his grandfather and in fact looked like me as a kid, meaning like *my* father as a kid — overall, inexplicably whiter since then, he has ping-ponged back and forth between looking like me and looking like wife’s dad

Moose also has brown hair with light reddish brown or even blond streaks; kid was literally born with highlights and frosted tips his eye color is an inexplicable deep slate blue; we expect this to change but have *no* idea where it came from to begin with
