interesting thread via @kendrictonn
a similar dynamic exists in fiction writing - the way to earn the big bucks is, apparently, to crank out 3-6 novel-shaped-objects per year https://t.co/SvF4qBgMu0

/ There's something to this, but my fanbase isn't that huge. Looking at some numbers, Staking a Claim ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081MW4W4Z … ) did about $150 in royalties over the last 90 days, or $600/yr ... at a price of $2.99 ebook / $9.99 / trade. https://twitter.com/octal/status/1343619487417954306 …

/ Now, of course, if I wrote 1 such story per month for a year, at the end of the year - if they all sold that well - I'd be making $6k/yr, and that's not nothing. I had plans to do this in 2019 (failed) and again in 2020 (failed). Maybe take another stab in 2021 ?

/ yeah, this is a fine idea, and I even did a survey a year or so back and found like 100 people would be willing to sign up I'm reticent, though, because I know what my coding-job and homesteading-lifestyle workload is, and don't want to make promises https://twitter.com/octal/status/1343619953426104321 …

/ I know that my fiction writing, all told, earns me a bit north of $15/hr. I haven't broken it down further. I can, tho... https://twitter.com/JacksonianDavis/status/1343622767145582592 …

/ I think that short stories like Staking a Claim take me maybe 4 days, plus half a day for my wife to make a cover? So 36 hours? Hmm, that's not bad - that means that shorts, integrated over, say, three years, earn me around $50/hr. Ah, but on the other hand, Firefly S2 >

/ earned me $5 over the last 90 days, so $60 over three years, but perhaps half the writing time, so $3.33 / hr The Team earned me $65 over 90 days, so $22/hr. Caterpillar: $50/90 days, so $17/hr.

/ so, anyway, looks like Aristillus stories can earn me $20-50/hr. (Tho it takes 3 years to earn that money ... not going to bother with net present value calculations). Mmm... not terrible.

/ I've got a few Aristillus short stories I'm thinking about writing. One is about a small splinter colony that got left behind at the end of book 2, another is about George White, the PI. Maybe some back story re Ewoma's family getting to Ari from Nigeria.

/ I'd kind of like to finish two half-written stories first, just to clear the decks: Timetraders #2, and Caterpillar #2. /shrug I dunno.
