(House was built w one run of Cat5 to each room, using orange pair for phone, terminating in a big twisted unlabeled knot in the basement. I took that apart and installed punchdown blocks/ patch board and havee been slowly tracing and labeling lines, and rewiring jacks.)

/ I'm so lucky to have so many people on twitter giving me advice that one should never run phone line over cat5 next to two data pairs. If it weren't for them helping me out I'd likely be lulled by the official docs and knowledge of physics and EE.https://twitter.com/deadlycognizant/status/1342979670950604800?s=19 …

/ Quite curious re the mental model that says that its ok to run 100MHz data signals on blue and brown pairs in a 1000Base-T configuration without fear of crosstalk, but running 15Khz signal on a pair w a different twist rate is going to #$%& the signal.

/ Reminder: I mute people on the very first instance of unsolicited incorrect advice. If you tell me something I didn't ask for, but you know more than me, I will grumble but kinda be thankful. But wrong AND unsolicited is beyond the pale.

/ Also very happy to be told that long runs of pairs outside the sheath is bad. (A) there's nothing I can do about this, I inherited it (B) you're wrong, it's long UNTWISTED pairs that are bad; the sheath does nothing (C) go away

/ TIA EIA 568 was designed to support POTS on one pair, that's why RJ 12 is a subset of RJ 45. And, again, please explain how you think it's ok to run 100MHz signals on blue and brown in 100BASE T, but not a 15KHz POTS signal?https://twitter.com/deadlycognizant/status/1342990057091649536?s=19 …

/ Advice that fails to ask me what the constraints are (many), if I'll be using phone at the same time as TCP/IP (no), and which fails to ask me how long the in wall cable run is ( < 5 feet) is derp. There's no evidence of understanding here, just received (wrong) wisdom.
