Hit the gym and was reminded that my dumbbell rack is too small. Had good fun welding yesterday...gonna head out to the barn now and check my supply of 2" angle iron ... may solve the problem.

7/ Absolutely could've butt joint3d, and have done so in other projects, but then I'd need all six new pieces to be identical length to, say, 1/32", instead of 1/8, cuts need to be 90.00° not +/- 3°, and alignment gets tricker (need to use a jig).https://twitter.com/jtces/status/1342271166325645312?s=19 …

8/ Bitt joint requires better grinding at ends to create a bevel to sink bead into.. And, finally, the overlap gives me extra strength and allows for mediocre welds. Tolerance for error = good.

I'm aware the welds are totally serviceable for purpose but the lizard brain is still screaming about seeing beads over paint I approve

I dunno anything about welding. Why did you weld behind existing rails along top and bottom vs just the abutting ends? Easier with size difference? Stronger?
