1/ Last night, wife gets a phone call. Neighbor two doors down got a delivery intended for us. I drive over, see 6 boxes by his door. I'm unsure of protocol- will he come out? Do I need a mask? Prob not. Ok, cool.

9/ My cruelest / most contemptuous theory: "he himself had no idea what he wanted ; he just had emotions swirling around inside his head, and they kept actuating his tongue"

10/ > human contact well, then he came to the wrong place

Think he was after a chat mate, probably been indoors for too long, missing those times at work when he could trap someone on lunch break and talk their ear off about his daily gripes

Commiseration. "Yeah, those guys can be real idiots" Some other disparaging remark to make you and him on the same side.

He craved human contact and wanted to talk with you about how they messed up. Group complaining is a bonding thing.

He wanted you to join in with him in complaining about the delivery service and their mistake. To bond over the shared outrage and share that experience.

This is the right answer, with extra points for a story about another time they misdelivered. There can even be a friendly game of one-upsmanship with more and more stories of misdelivered or damaged packages (bonus for both). "My mom received a package meant for another state!"

He was looking to increase his status. If you need his help - status up. Do as he tells - status up. If you listen to him talk - status up. He may have been satisfied if you had said, “Help me. You are exactly right. I’ll do that” That would reduce his anxious search for status
-
The search for status evolved to feed ones babies. Higher status = more, better everything. True in the long long ago. True today.
