After I scrub and dry it I'll put a dab of oil in and rub it around with a paper towel to give it that sheen. I assume it's unnecessary and I'm just psyopping myself

No less need for soap on your cast iron as on any other pan. And if it comes off with ordinary hand washing soap, it’s not “seasoning“, it’s just grease.
I screwed up the seasoning in one once, and let me tell you, a little soap and water wasn’t budging it.
My favorite cast iron pan came from my great aunt and is probably 50 years old. She used SOS pads on it and it’s still amazing.
