Writing the chapter on solar energy for homesteads, doing maths ... and, holy !@#, guys, I'm getting a solar system installed next year. NH has extremely expensive electricity, and we use a lot of it ($386/mo). NPV of 25 yrs (lifetime of a system) is $80k. Panels are < $20k

I keep meaning to look into it here in the desert, but I don’t want to have to maintain it. And being rural increases transaction costs in the form of grifting risk.

If you do go through with the solar panels, look at DC powered lighting. You end up wasting 10-20% of your power going from solar DC to mains AC, then your led bulb looses another 10-20% going back to DC. Best for shop/barn areas where you need a lot of light + can easy retrofit

The bugaboo for pv systems in a lot of situations seems to be the cost & lifespan of batteries, or gotchas in net metering policies. Have you decided on batteries vs. net metering?
